Mother's Emotional Story of Gonstead Chiropractic Treatment for Child's Incontinence

I originally came to West Coast Spine Center to see Sarasota chiropractic chiropractor Dr. Craig Barcomb because my six-year-old son had been struggling with daytime and nighttime accidents for several years. It began when he was three, and despite talking to his pediatrician and several other doctors, I was always told, “he’ll grow out of it.” That never happened. By the end of kindergarten, it was still a constant problem, with accidents multiple times a week at school. We were told he might be constipated, but no real diagnosis or solution was ever given—just guesses. The only actual treatment prescribed was multiple doses of MiraLAX daily for six months. After years without improvement, I decided to explore whether chiropractic care, specifically the Gonstead technique, could help.

When we met Dr. Barcomb, I explained everything, and he immediately had an idea of what the problem might be. It was the first time someone didn’t just look at me blankly and say “he’ll grow out of it.” After an examination, he took an X-ray, and right there on the screen was exactly what he suspected. It was such a relief to finally see a possible answer. As a mother searching for help for years, it was emotional to realize there might actually be a solution.

Dr. Barcomb was right. After just a few chiropractic treatments, my son hasn’t had a single accident since. The care was gentle, precise, and non-invasive — no drugs, no surgery, just skillful spinal adjustments using the Gonstead method.

The biggest takeaway for me is that as parents, we need to look for alternative solutions. Many of us automatically go to a pediatrician for every issue, but chiropractic care can address much more than just neck pain or back pain. Here in Sarasota, we’re fortunate to have chiropractors like Dr. Barcomb who not only help with conditions like whiplash, auto accident injuries, and auto accident therapy, but also with children’s health concerns you might never think are related to the spine and nervous system.

Whether you’re recovering from an injury, exploring physical therapy, considering laser therapy for pain relief, or looking for help with a chronic problem, chiropractic care could be the answer you’ve been searching for. I never would have thought my son’s issue was related to chiropractic, but now that I understand how the nervous system and spine work together, it makes perfect sense.
